Social and emotional learning (SEL) is an integral part of education and human development. SEL is the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions.
At Coal Ridge Middle, we utilize Seven Mindsets, a mindset-based SEL. Mindsets-based SEL takes it a step further by identifying the patterns of thoughts that influence our feelings, actions, and decisions. It is far more effective than programs that encourage skills or habits through the development of intrinsic motivation that enable a growth mindset in adults and students. Individuals who have a firm belief in their potential, an optimistic vision of the future, and a strong sense of personal authenticity perform better academically and forge more substantial relationships in life.
