Principal Update

Dear Coal Ridge Families,

We hope this newsletter finds you well and thriving as we continue our journey through the school year. Here at Coal Ridge Middle School, we are committed to fostering a supportive and engaging learning environment for all our students. Please take a moment to read through the important updates and opportunities below.

Important Dates to Remember
  • No School on Monday, January 20 In observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, there will be no school. We encourage everyone to take this day to reflect on the values of equality, justice, and service that Dr. King championed.
  • Parent-Teacher Conferences Mark your calendars for January 30 and February 4. These conferences are a great opportunity for students and parents to engage with teachers regarding academic progress. We encourage all students to attend alongside their parents to gain insights and set goals for the remainder of the school year.
School Community Update

Our students continue to excel and show remarkable perseverance as they tackle rigorous academic tasks. We are incredibly proud of their achievements and dedication. As a school community, we are focusing on helping students with task initiation, equipping them with strategies to begin assignments promptly and effectively.

Athletics and Arts

  • Girls Basketball We are wrapping up the season and are incredibly proud of our team’s efforts and sportsmanship.
  • Wrestling Our wrestling season will be starting soon. Students are able to sign up at school, if they are interested.
  • Musical: Shrek, Jr. Students are busy rehearsing, designing the set, and thinking through costumes for our upcoming musical. It’s an exciting time for our drama department!
Celebration of Excellence

The St. Vrain Valley Schools Education Foundation is excited to announce that the nomination form for the Celebration of Excellence is now open! This annual event, formerly known as Tribute to Teachers, celebrates outstanding educators who make significant contributions to student success.

Nomination Details:
  • Open Period: January 13 – February 5
  • Eligibility: Nominees must be licensed educators within the State of Colorado and currently employed at a St. Vrain Valley Schools campus. Educators honored as their school’s Educator of the Year in the past two years are not eligible.

We invite students, parents, volunteers, fellow educators, and community members to nominate educators who inspire and innovate. Each school will select one Educator of the Year, recognized at the Celebration of Excellence on April 11, 2025, where a district-wide Educator of the Year will also be announced.

Thank you for your continued support and engagement with Coal Ridge Middle School. We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events!

Warm regards,

Natalee Swan, Principal

In observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day there will be no school on Monday, January 20th. Enjoy the long weekend!

Parent Corner: Task Initiation

For the next couple of weeks, we will focus on helping students improve their task initiation skills. Supporting your child with task initiation can help their academic success. Task initiation is about beginning tasks promptly and efficiently. To reinforce this skill with your child, you can discuss their school day routines, specifically focusing on how they start their warm-up activities in class. Understanding these routines can help you reinforce similar strategies at home, such as setting a specific time for starting homework.

We will focus on task initiation by helping students enter their classrooms and begin the warm-up immediately without being prompted. Another effective approach is to engage your child in conversations about their classroom experiences. Ask questions like, “How do you feel when you start your warm-ups at school?” or “What helps you get started on tasks?” These discussions encourage self-reflection and help your child identify the best strategies for them. By focusing on task initiation during these conversations, you empower your child to develop effective habits that can enhance their learning experience.

Wrestling Sign Up

We are excited to begin Wrestling Season starting on Monday, January 27th! We will have a parent meeting after practice Friday, January 31st at 4:15 PM, where we will go over athlete expectations, how to register, and the schedule. Boys and girls are welcome. Practice will be Monday-Friday after school 3:00-4:30 PM. Students must have a ride home from practice, there are no buses that can take them home. Please reach out to Coach Ridgway ([email protected]) if you have any questions!

EPIC At Home Reading Challenge

We are starting our EPIC At-Home Reading Challenge. Students are encouraged to read at home for at least 20 minutes, five days a week, totaling 100 minutes, to participate in a weekly book drawing. To enter, students must complete their reading log and have a parent sign it. On Fridays, students will exchange their logs with their advisory teacher. Each completed log is entered into a raffle, with one winner per grade announced on Monday. Winners can then choose a free book as their prize.

Hearing & Vision Screening Day

There will be a vision and hearing team at Coal Ridge Middle School on Thursday, January 30th to screen all 7th graders and students new to the district students. Please encourage your child to wear their glasses/contact lenses to school that day. If the screening indicates your student needs further evaluation, you will be notified by mail. Please consult your school’s health clerk, Debbie Mills, at [email protected] if you have questions or concerns.
