Parent Corner: Age Appropriate Behaviors and How to Respond
Middle schoolers go through physical and emotional developmental changes, which can lead to behaviors that may seem difficult but are normal for their age. Here are some challenging yet age-appropriate behaviors in middle school students:
Increased Sensitivity to Criticism
- Why it happens: Their self-esteem is fragile as they figure out who they are and how others perceive them.
- What’s normal: Overreacting to constructive feedback or taking things personally.
- How to respond: Frame feedback positively, focus on effort over outcome, and encourage a growth mindset.
Procrastination & Lack of Organization
- Why it happens: Their brain is still developing executive function skills like time management and planning.
- What’s normal: Forgetting homework, leaving things to the last minute, or struggling with multi-step tasks.
- How to respond: Help them create routines, use planners, and teach prioritization rather than just punishing them for forgetfulness.
Increased Privacy & Wanting More Independence
- Why it happens: They’re beginning to separate from their parents to develop their own identity.
- What’s normal: Wanting more alone time, shutting their bedroom door, or being less open about their day.
- How to respond: Respect reasonable privacy, but stay engaged by asking open-ended questions and keeping communication open. Maintain consistency with what is allowed to be private and what is not allowed to be private.
Spirit Week!
