Principal Update

Hello Coal Ridge Middle School Community,

As we conclude Quarter 3, we have much to celebrate and look forward to as we head into Spring Break. Here’s a recap of our recent activities and upcoming events:

Music Concert Success

This week, our talented 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade students wrapped up their band concerts. It was a delight to see their hard work and musical growth showcased so beautifully. Thank you to all the students, teachers, and parents who made these events successful.

Upcoming: Shrek the Musical, Jr.

Rehearsals for our CRMS production of Shrek the Musical, Jr. are going exceptionally well. Mark your calendars for April 3rd and 4th! We can’t wait to see our students bring this enchanting story to life on stage.

Track and Field Season

Our track and field season will commence right after Spring Break, with practices starting that Monday. Students are gearing up for an exciting season of athletics, and we’re thrilled to support them in their endeavors. There is a link below to sign up!

Spirit Week and Challenge Days

This past week was full of energy and school spirit. Students participated in Spirit Week, enjoyed Challenge Days, and capped off the week with two fun-filled school-wide celebrations on Friday. It was wonderful to see our school community come together in such a vibrant way.

5th Grade Visit

We enjoyed hosting 5th graders from our feeder elementaries on Wednesday.  They came over and saw a musical performance from each of our music programs.  They also got to learn a little bit about our amazing school and what to expect when they join us in August.  We are so excited to welcome then into our Coal Ridge family!

Spring Break Wishes

As we enter Spring Break, I encourage everyone to take this time to relax and recharge. Encourage your children to unplug from electronics, dive into a good book, or embark on an outdoor adventure. We look forward to welcoming students back on March 24th for the final quarter of the school year.

Support Our Teachers and Staff

Please consider visiting the Revtrak link to donate funds in support of our Parent Advisory Group. These donations will help us spoil our teachers and staff during Staff Appreciation Week. Your contributions make a significant difference in showing our gratitude for their hard work and dedication.

Wishing you all a restful and enjoyable Spring Break!  Stay tuned for another piece of communication from Coal Ridge with a survey.

Warm regards,

Natalee Swan, Principal

Parent Corner: Age Appropriate Behaviors and How to Respond

Middle schoolers undergo physical and emotional developmental changes, which can lead to behaviors that may seem difficult but are normal for their age. Here are some challenging yet age-appropriate behaviors in middle school students:

Interest in Romantic Relationships & Crushes

  • Why it happens: They’re developing deeper emotional connections and curiosity about relationships.
  • What’s normal: Having crushes, giggling about relationships, or feeling heartbroken over small things.
  • How to respond: Provide age-appropriate guidance about healthy relationships and emotions. Avoid shaming or dismissing their feelings.

Occasional Risk-Taking & Poor Decision-Making

  • Why it happens: Their prefrontal cortex (decision-making part of the brain) is still developing, while their desire for excitement is increasing.
  • What’s normal: Acting impulsively, doing silly dares, or underestimating consequences.
  • How to respond: Teach them about natural consequences and safe risk-taking (e.g., trying new activities instead of dangerous stunts).

Complaints About Fairness & Comparing Themselves to Others

  • Why it happens: They are developing a sense of justice and social awareness.
  • What’s normal: Saying things like “That’s not fair!” or comparing privileges with siblings or classmates.
  • How to respond: Acknowledge their feelings while explaining that fair doesn’t always mean equal.

Congratulations to our Wrestlers!

Congratulations to all of our wrestlers who just finished a fantastic season. We are proud of the hard work and perseverance that our wrestlers demonstrated. Congratulations to the students who placed at the district wrestling tournament this past weekend.
