Principal Update
Dear Coal Ridge Families,
This week, we rallied behind our boys’ basketball team as they competed in their games. Our school spirit was high, and we cheered them on with pride!
Our cross country team is gearing up for the championship meet this Saturday. We wish them the best of luck as they give their all in this important event.
We’re also excited to announce that Coal Ridge will be hosting its first-ever Robotics Tournament on November 2nd. Stay tuned for more details on this exciting event.
Our 6th graders will have their first middle school dance party today after school. By the time you read this, they will have danced the afternoon away and celebrated this milestone with fun and laughter!
Additionally, we had our monthly fire drill earlier this week to ensure everyone is prepared and knows the safety protocols.
I hope your students have shared the exciting activities and engaging lessons they’ve experienced throughout the week. Please continue to encourage them to practice kindness in both their actions and words, as we work together to foster success for all our students.
Thank you for your ongoing support, and I hope you have a wonderful weekend!
Sincerely,
Natalee Swan, Principal
Parent Corner: Safe Spaces
This year, we’ve consistently emphasized the importance of Coal Ridge Middle School’s SPARK behavior with our students. The “S” in SPARK stands for “safe spaces.” For our school to be a true place of learning, it must feel safe and welcoming for all students.
The middle school years are an important time of growth and development, where students learn to navigate social interactions. It’s crucial that we take the time to discuss appropriate humor and respectful communication with our students. We frequently remind our students to consider whether their comments are kind, helpful, or necessary.
At this age, it’s particularly important to have open conversations with your child about the harmful impact of language that targets individuals based on immutable characteristics. While our kids may be seeking ways to connect with their peers through humor, guiding them toward appropriate and respectful ways is essential.
Halloween Costumes
Students are allowed to wear Halloween costumes to school on Thursday, Oct. 31. Halloween costumes must comply with the school dress code and cannot interfere with the learning environment. Masks and face paint that conceal the student’s identity will not be allowed. All bloody, gory, or violent components of the costume must be left at home. If your child has questions about their costume, please have them check in with an administrator.
Dance Club
Dance club will be canceled this week. They will resume their practices on Wednesday, Nov. 6.
Drone Performance at FHS Football
On Friday, October 25th, the Innovation Center Drone Performance Team will be performing a drone show at Frederick High, around 8pm, during the football game’s halftime. We would like to invite the nearby feeder schools to attend. In addition to being a fantastic show for your students, parents, and the greater school community, the performance will expose students to exciting careers, areas of study, and opportunities they may not yet be aware of. We are excited to expose your students to how they might be able to get involved at the Innovation Center when they’re in high school.
The Innovation Center’s Drone Performance Team is the first high school student-led outdoor drone performance team in the world, and we are passionate about its potential impact on students across our district and beyond. We believe that younger students would greatly benefit from early exposure to the many amazing opportunities available in our district, and would love to have students and families from your school attend the show! If you would like to come early to come see set up, you and any other staff or your families are absolutely welcome.
If you would like to advertise this event to your community, attached is a student-written blurb about the Drone Performance team. Please feel free to edit or change information as you feel necessary. We have also attached a video created by our media team and a picture if you would like to advertise using either.
We have students ready to address all safety, communication, and logistical concerns.
