Coal Ridge Middle School Weekly Bulletin

As part of our nonfiction unit, we read an article on school start times. Students had to identify evidence that supported each side of the argument and then form their own opinion. They cited evidence on sticky notes and put them on the board to see which side would win the tug of war.

To show our appreciation, the district is hosting two drone shows, including one at Frederick High School on November 19th at 6:30 PM. We hope to see you there! More details are included below.

Athletics Update
Our boys’ basketball season has wrapped up, and girls’ basketball practices begin Monday! Practices will run until 4:30 PM, and student-athletes should be picked up promptly at that time.

Clubs Reminder
After-school clubs end at 4:15 PM for parent pick-up. A bus with limited routes is available for club participants but is not provided for athletics or spectators.

Looking Ahead to Break
We’re entering our final week before a well-deserved week-long break! Please encourage your students to stay focused, work hard, and complete all outstanding assignments.

Thank you for entrusting us with your amazing children—it’s a joy to spend time with them every day. As always, please don’t hesitate to reach out with questions or concerns.

Warm regards,

Natalee Swan, Principal

Parent Corner: Kindness

This year, we’ve consistently emphasized the importance of Coal Ridge Middle School’s SPARK behavior with our students. The “K” in SPARK stands for kindness to others. Teaching our kids to be kind to others, even when it is difficult, is a life skill that will serve them well.

Teaching kindness to your child supports both their emotional and social development. Start by modeling kindness in your daily life and reinforcing positive behaviors. Here are some actionable steps to help foster kindness:

  • Model Kindness: Show compassion in everyday situations, like holding doors open or speaking kindly about others.
  • Encourage Empathy: Ask your child how others might feel in different situations: “How do you think Sarah felt when that happened?”
  • Praise Kindness: Offer specific praise when your child displays kindness, such as “I’m proud of how you helped that classmate today.”
  • Practice Active Listening: Encourage your child to listen attentively and respond thoughtfully during conversations.
  • Encourage Random Acts of Kindness: Suggest simple acts like complimenting a peer or helping with schoolwork.
  • Teach Apologies & Forgiveness: Guide them through offering sincere apologies and encourage them to forgive others.
  • Promote Inclusion: Talk about standing up to bullying and respecting people from all backgrounds and experiences.
  • Create a Kindness-Oriented Home: Celebrate acts of kindness within your family and make it a priority.
