This year, we are focused on having an EPIC (Every Person Impacts Culture) year!

Principal’s Update

Dear Coal Ridge Families,

We had an EPIC week at Coal Ridge, where Every Person Impacts Culture! Our students are doing amazing things, both academically and in our various clubs and activities. In the classrooms, I witnessed students making meaning of complex texts, solving multi-step equations, and completing experiments.

We also had some exciting events this week! On Monday, we hosted a volleyball game, with some of our choir students performing a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem. After school, our Dance Club was spotted dancing up a storm! It’s wonderful to see our students engaged in such a variety of activities.

A quick reminder that our Spirit Store will remain open until September 22nd, so be sure to get your Coal Ridge gear before then! Additionally, if you haven’t yet purchased insurance for your student’s iPad, please log into Infinite Campus to do so by September 15th. It only takes $1 to activate the insurance.

Looking ahead, Parent-Teacher Conferences are just around the corner. Please see the information below to sign up and schedule your conference time. We look forward to discussing your child’s progress with you.

Next week is Spirit Week, and we can’t wait to see the school community come together in excitement! We’ll be kicking things off with Pajama Day on Monday, and on Friday, we’ll wrap up with Extreme Red and White Day. The rest of the week’s themes are listed below.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We are committed to partnering with you to ensure that our students are finding success.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!

Warm regards,

Natalee Swan, Principal

Parent Corner: Helping Kids Manage Homework

One of the challenges of middle school is helping students develop habits and routines to complete their homework. We at Coal Ridge try to ensure that students do not have large amounts of homework each night. Classes aim for students to have less than 30 minutes of homework from their class each night; most classes do not send homework home with the students. That being said, there are times when the students need to be completing work at home. There are things we can do as parents to help our children establish productive and effective work habits around homework.

  1. Create a public workspace to complete homework: We want our kids to complete their homework in a common area where we can monitor and check in on what they are doing. It is easy for kids to get distracted, so we want them to work in a space where we can help redirect them when they get distracted and answer questions when they get stuck.
  2. Encourage them to use their planners: Before your children start their homework, sit down with them to look at their planner and determine what needs to be completed for that evening. Middle school students need help prioritizing what is important and timely compared to assignments that can be completed in a day or two.
  3. Be present to help with homework: Middle school is a deceptive age where our kids seem to be independent and able to complete their assignments independently; however, at this age, they need our help to manage their focus and develop effective study habits.
